After leaving Popoli, we visited San Liberatore a Maiella, an abbey which was built in the 11th Century by the Benedictine Order of Cassino. One needs to pass through the town of Serramonacesca to visit the abbey.

A view of Serramonacesca from the "Monte Maiella". Notice the snow covered mountain in the back ground.

The church was locked when we first visited the site. Later in the day, we had a private tour when the church custodian offered to open the door for us. He did not want us to leave the area without seeing this national treasure. Our Italian driver was could not believe it. "You don't understand. Things like this just don't happen."
